The demand for Nickel is at an all-time high with a number of auto manufacturers now ramping up production of electric vehicles across the world. Here’s a look at the five biggest Nickel mining sites.
#1 NORI Clarion-Clipperton
Sediment Hosted Manganese: The Nori Clarion-Clipperton polymetallic project, located 4,000 meters deep into the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and containing 11.5 million tonnes of metal, is at the top of the list. The project is known as Nori Clarion-Clipperton in international waters.
#2 TOML Clarion-Clipperton
Other commodities: cobalt, copper, manganese Other minerals include nickel and manganese. The TOML exploration zone in neighboring Tonga is also part of The Metals Company’s portfolio, with inferred resources of 9.9 million tonnes contained nickel and similar grades to NORI. In 2020, the Metals Company acquired Tonga Offshore further expanding its capabilities.
#3 Sangaji
The Sangaji project in Halmahera, Indonesia, held by Indonesian miner ANTAM has 6.6 million tonnes of nickel ore.
#4 Dumont
Waterton Global Resource Management’s Dumont nickel-sulphide deposit in Quebec is ranked fourth. With 5.7 million tonnes of contained nickel and the potential to produce over 30 years, Dumont will be among the world’s biggest nickel operations with an annual nickel production of 39,000 tonnes for over 30 years. In 2021, Waterton worked with Goldman Sachs to provide a round of expansion funding to further their production.
#5 Turnagain
The fifth-largest nickel deposit in the world is located at Turnagain, British Columbia, and it’s operated by Giga Metals (TSXV: GIGA). Turnagain will be the world’s first carbon-neutral mine when it’s completed its latest renovations. The mine has 4.8 million tonnes of contained Nickel throughout its mining site.
These mining facilities are responsible for providing the world’s economy with the much-needed Nickel to keep production going. Nickel is a critical metal in our ever-growing digital world and these mines are at the forefront of keeping up with global demand.
